Hay Barn wins 2017 WoodWorks Regional Excellence Award

We are honored to announce that the Cowell Ranch Hay Barn has won the 2017 WoodWorks Regional Excellence Award! This means the Hay Barn will be featured on the WoodWorks gallery website, in a video used in symposiums around the country, and in the book "Celebrating Excellence in Wood Architecture 2016-2017."

Not a bad way to kick off 2017 - we hope you all have an award-winning year as well.

Hay Barn wins 2016 AIA Montana Honor Award

We are proud and excited to announce that the Hay Barn, just completed earlier this year, has won its very first award. The Hay Barn now has the prestigious 2016 AIA Montana Honor Award under its belt, and we could not be more pleased. Our deepest thanks to those who contributed to its design and construction, including craftspeople, engineers, and fabricators.

UCSC Hay Barn Update: Not Your Ordinary Horse Stable...

To address privacy concerns within the new Hay Barn, steel interior partitions were installed, tucked away between the service core and the north wall. Acting as a divider between the main space and the office program, careful consideration was given to the size of these partitions so as not to disrupt the overall character of the building or to obscure structural elements expressing "old vs. new."

Earlier this week, Fernau + Hartman spent an entire day with photographer Cesar Rubio to capture the beautifully restored Hay Barn on the UCSC campus (note: the photos you see below were taken by F+H, not Cesar Rubio).

The clouds began rolling in towards the end of the day, but the Hay Barn still looked as stunning as ever.

It may have been overcast yesterday, but there was nothing gloomy about the UCSC Hay Barn site. As the photos from Fernau & Hartman's most recent site visit show, construction is nearing completion and the barn is becoming increasingly refined in its details:

UCSC Hay Barn Update

It's been an exciting few weeks here at Fernau & Hartman. We are thrilled to share with you that construction on the Hay Barn has been moving along nicely; insulation is making its appearance, and the wood paneling and glass add to the barn's refined yet rustic presence on the UCSC campus. UCSC Hay Barn - Old & New

Since the Barn raising ceremony last month, the historic timber framing has been completed, providing us with a real sense of what the completed Barn's presence will be at the campus entrance. Over the past couple of weeks, the focus has shifted to the installation of the interior siding. Comprised of salvaged boards from the original 1860's Hay Barn and immaculate new boards, sourced locally from Big Creek Lumber in Santa Cruz, the siding reinforces the contrast of old & new within the space. Meanwhile, the walls are being framed and the interior rooms are taking shape. At the moment there is a spectacular lighting effect, which occurs as the sunlight filters through the skip sheathing ceiling. However, it won't last long. Very soon, plywood sheathing will seal the roof, blocking out this spotted light.
